A box office or ticket office is a place where tickets are sold to the audience to watch an event or a play. The term is especially used in the context of film industry, as a synonym for the amount of business a particular production, such as a film or theatre show, receives.
Box office is monitored by numerous websites such as BoxOffice, Box Office India, A Box Office, Box Office Mojo, Koimoi, ShowBIZ, The Numbers. These sites provide box office information for a number of movies. Films that are considered to be unsuccessful in box office are called box office flops and films which are said to be successful in box office are called box office hits. To find whether a movie made a profit or not, it is not correct to directly compare the movie's production budget, because the cinema theatre keeps nearly half of the gross on average. How is box office collection calculated? Producer is the person who invests in the films. The money that a producer invests in making a film is called the "Budget". It comprises of everything from fees paid to the actors, to the crew members, technicians, costumes, makeup and other costs. After the movie is completed, the producer has to bear Promotion and advertisement costs also. The distributor is the most important link between producers and theatres. The producer sells his film to a third party. On pre-defined agreements with the theatre owners, the distributors hire their theatres to showcase the films. Distributors receive the returns from theatre owners on a weekly basis. 50% of the first week's collection, 42% in the second week, 37% in the third week and theatre fixed 30% share is given to the film distributors. Thus the profit and loss of the distributor is calculated as :
benefit/loss of the distributor= cost of the buying the film-chare of the distributor.
